Capital Z is a lifestyle and accessories brand founded by two sisters and mothers, Lindsey Schuster and Ally. Dedicated to uplifting busy women, the brand curates fashion and home accents that embody chic style, versatility, and "unexpected" details.
The Challenge
In its foundational years, Capital Z existed as a series of inspired but "loose ideas". The founders needed to translate their vision of "unapologetic happiness" and effortless joy into a professional, cohesive brand identity that would resonate with busy, modern women and stand out in a competitive marketplace.
The Strategy & Solution
1. Foundational Brand Framework
I began by establishing a comprehensive brand framework to define the intangible "why" behind Capital Z.
Purpose & Promise: We defined the brand's purpose as enhancing every moment for cherished customers. The brand promise focuses on empowering women to express their individuality through chic, bold, and dynamic collections.
The "Sage" Archetype: To position Capital Z as a trusted resource, we aligned the brand with the Sage archetype, emphasizing wisdom, intelligence, and clarity.
Target Audience: We identified the ideal customer as a busy woman with disposable income who values simple pleasures, self-care, and versatile pieces that seamlessly integrate into a fast-paced routine.
2. Visual Identity & Design System
With the framework in place, I developed a visual identity.
Logo Design: Created a primary logo consisting of a unique logotype ("Capital") and a standalone "Z" icon to ensure instant recognition across all touchpoints.
Color Palette: Designed a palette that is "lighthearted but also bold," featuring vibrant accent colors like Radiant Bloom and Blaze Red set against a dominant clean white for digital backgrounds.
Typography & Photography: Established a hierarchy using fonts like Fino Regular for decorative headlines and Helvetica Neue for utility. Photography guidelines were set to be "clear, bright, fresh, and approachable," always keeping the emphasis on the product quality.
Product Design: I collaborated on the development and design of their signature hat line, ensuring the physical products reflected the brand's chic and edgy vibe.
3. Multi-Channel Digital Marketing (3-Year Partnership)
As the brand evolved, I served as the lead for digital marketing, ensuring the brand’s voice and visuals remained cohesive.
Consistency: Managed creative across email, social media, and seasonal campaigns.
Voice: Leveraged a brand voice that is "witty, straightforward, and optimistic," acting as a "best friend and confidant" to the audience.
Growth: Supported the brand's transition from an early-stage startup to an established online presence at www.shopcapitalz.com.
From the Founder:
"Working with Lauren was such an asset to Capital Z... she helped us translate loose ideas into a clear brand identity by building the visual framework that gave Capital Z its recognizable look and feel... Her ability to take direction, iterate thoughtfully, and elevate every project made our marketing feel polished and professional."
— Lindsey Schuster, Co-Founder, Capital Z
The Results
The partnership successfully moved Capital Z from a conceptual phase to a polished, professional brand. According to Co-Founder Lindsey Schuster, the work provided the "visual framework" that gave the brand its identity and elevated every project to feel "polished and professional". Today, Capital Z stands as a community-focused brand that empowers women to find joy in the "simplest pleasures" with effortless style.
